Basic: I = 1 ; V = 5 ; X = 10 ; L = 50 ; C = 100 ; D = 500 ; M = 1000

Each letter can be repeated only 3 times so if you want 4, you cant do IIII. you have to do 5 -1=4 IV. A letter on the left is minus, on the left is plus. Same goes with the rest.

400 will be 500-100 = CD and 600 will be 500+100 = DC

I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4 ( 5 -1)
V = 5
VI = 6 (5+1)
VII = 7
VIII = 8
IX = 9 (10-1)
X = 10
XI = 11 (10+1)
XII = 12
XIII = 13
XIV = 14 [10 + 4(IV)]
XV = 15
....and so on.....

1976 = MCMLXXVI [ 1000 (M) + 900 (CM) + 70 (LXX) + 6(VI)]

You need to know more than Roman Numeral to sell coins. You need to know what they are and how much they are worth. Selling blind is not a wise thing to do. Others here have helped in the numeral department, so I will just leave you with the above advice.
