The game will play like the classic Sierra and Lucasarts adventures, but I want more up-to-date graphics... and I'm on a budget. Anyone know of decent software that could help?

Well, the first cheap (as in free) 3D modeling program that comes to my mind is Blender, which is available for several platforms. However, you may or may not find the interface kinda weird to use, depending on what you've used before.

3D Studio Max and Maya are goint to cost you a few thousand dollars, so forget about those. Microsoft has said recently that they plan to release software tools for free that will help people build video games exclusively on the xbox 360. So if I were you I'd e-mail Microsoft and ask them when you could get your hands on the developement tools.

Blender; $0 or $10/month

As a hobbyist, freelancer, or small to medium sized studio you can use Blender as a low-cost alternative to Maya ($125/month) and After Effects ($20/month).

3D Canvas is ideal for low-poly game models, and reasonably cheap (well, cheaper than 3DSMax!).
