but a man's point of view diamond is just a piece of jewerly or crystals or glass when men do not wear jewerly at all okay except gold ring and gold bracelet or if your a **** or gay you might wear them. so diamond uses is for jewerly and nothing else so why would men spend a lot for diamond just to impress his wife or a gift to his lady when diamond has no use at all for guys except some few diamonds were use in industry thats all. so do you think diamond has a higher value cause women likes to wear them or to make them beautiful .so do you think women's extravagant why this piece of crystal has a value in life when to me its just a pieace of glass or sparkling crystal when has no uses at all for men so why would men spend all his money for this piece of crystal just to make a women happy.

Actually, diamond is fairly common. After all, it's just carbon. And it can be artificially produced.

So what makes it valuable?

In an industrial sense, it's valuable because it's the hardest known substance. That makes it useful for cutting, drilling, etc.

But as jewelry, the diamond is a product of deBeers. They convinced all the women of the world that a "wedding ring" should have a diamond.

There are a lot more diamonds than there are buyers of diamonds.

So why isn't the price lower? DeBeers holds something like 85% of the world's (natural) diamonds. Their monopoly power gives them the ability to artificially inflate prices.

How long will this last? Hard to say. At least two labs are now able to produce flawless diamonds of almost any desired size. Cheaply. I don't doubt that deBeers has worked out some sort of deal to keep them from flooding the market.

As for why women want diamonds? Well, they're sparkly and they can show them off to their friends. That's about the limit of what most women are capable.

No, I think it is expensive because men keep buying it to impress women, because they think that's what we want.
Look at it this way: You're a guy watching a jewelry commercial, which as we all know are filmed in fairyland, where the guy is Mr. Romance, etc, etc..
Now how do you feel? Obligated to buy? Is your woman in the room with you, oohing and aahing?
You know that women like romance and the jewelers play that up in their ad campaigns. The ads appeal to the women, but men are the ones buying the jewelry.
Personally, if I found my true Mr. Right today, I couldn't care less if he doesn't come packing diamonds!

I don't like big gawdy jewerly. I love my engagement ring though. It is almost 1 karat (which I wouldn't want any bigger) and was a family heirloom so it has a special meaning. Since the stone was his all he had to pay for was it to be set and for the band. But the lady at the jewelry store told me the ring's value is around $9,000. I almost sh!t my pants when she said that. I couldn't believe it. I never thought I would have a ring that expensive!

Diamonds are expensive only because they're exceptionally hard (Metaphorically and literally) to come by. They're rare (Although sometimes it doesn't seem like it) and a "GOOD" one is an extreme rare find.

Personally, I don't like diamonds. They're clear rocks. I prefer stones with color, like Opals and Sapphires. To each their own. Supply/Demand is always a factor in price, but I feel that the rarity and the difficulty of obtaining (A real one -- Factory created diamonds don't count) is the real reason they're so expensive.

Diamonds are not the most expensive piece of jewelry. Some gems are extremely rare and will, therefore, fetch a much more significant price. Diamonds are not even technically "rare." Diamond companies use supply and demand to further their own goals (as any good businessman would do) and because of that will tend to limit supply so that the diamonds will actually fetch a higher price.

I like diamonds because I think they are gorgeous and I would like them just as well if they weren't so expensive. But I prefer to buy my own, so I wish they weren't!

My guy gave me emeralds because they remind me of his gorgeous eyes.

Incidentally De Beers don't won 85% of the worlds natural diamonds. The argyle mines in Australia have more diamond in them than either the russian or south african mines put together and are of a higher quality. Although Openheimer did make an emergency trip to Australia when the mine was first discovered to make sure they didn't drop them on to the market in one hit.

Gem grade diamonds are as expensive as they are mostly because of supply and market manipulation.

But they are great for sawblades and grinding wheels, and they don't mess with that market much.

no they are only as expensive as the amound of money you are willing to pay for it. additionally, they really aren't all that rare. there is a 1 carat or bigger diamond available to anyone who wants one, given whatever the going cost for one is.
