the white man.

Seriously.

We gave them smallpox, introduced them to alcohol (what else will you turn to when you have nothing else?), took away their land, kjlled them off, forced their children to become christians and forget their language and culture. The current "reservations" are so small they don't provide for enough land to farm on, are in remote areas. Yes, they can move but they have so few options. Their schools are horribly understaffed and underfunded. So few people know about institutionalized racism. I recommend reading up on it. You'd be amazed how evil white people can be. (And to clear things up, I'm as white as you can be, but open to learning about the experiences and struggles of those without white priviledge)

while most people assume you mean American Indians, I assume you mean East Indians due to the time this question was written (It's 2:00 AM in the United States and about 2:00 PM in India.)

For the poverty in India which is astonishing, I blame the caste system and the ability of one group to feel that another group is beneath them and that "GOD" condones isoloation for some and popularity and wealth for another.

When people don't consider themselves as part of a whole and that each person is part of everyone else...IN THIS LIFE...then starvation, disease, crime infilterate throughout the entire society. No one is an island and the poverty of one is a direct reflection of the poverty of all. If you step over a diseased person lying in the street, you too will become diseased and your family with you.

Until all people realize that the pain of one is the pain of all and begin to do something about it, poverty, disease and crime will flood India inspite of the technology and wealthy of modern society. Modern society and technology can not cure superstition and egotistical behavior. Humble yourselves and take care of one another with love instead of taking care of only "Me and Mine" and there will be change in India.

(I am amazed and appalled by the egotistical business and religious castes of India and the unparalleled fear and superstition of the lower classes...no wonder there are problems there.)

Your name suggests you are an Indian. Let me tell you, India is not a poor country. We have enough resources to feed, clothe all the Indians. Unfortunately poverty (not only in India but World wide) lies in our eyes. we consider anyone living below western standards - poor, but there are millions of happy Indians living in villages, accepting the Indian way of life that suits our environment and culture.
For more details you should read about our rich heritage - written by Indian authors.

Lack of money. Sorry, the best people to answer this question are Indians. I assume that you mean American Indians. with all due respect other groups have been improperly treated and have risen above their situation. Why is there no Dr. Martin Luther King type in behalf of them. Ask the Indians.
