Of course there are so many good novels to read.
If you're interested in the classics you should definitely try the Jane Austen books, Pride and Prejudice is my personal favorite Emma is also very good, so are her other books. You could also try some novels by the Bronte sisters, Wuthering heights , etc.
There are so many other grate classics too; like the very famous Victor Hugo books, like Grate expectations etc.
If you're not interested in the classics, I do believe there are so many grate books to choose from that aren't too heavy, what so ever. I also agree with the Alexandre Dumas books, they're all grate.
Depends on what kind of novel you want, really.
Good luck anyways. :)

The Canadian author Robertson Davies wrote several really good novels, including three trilogies. Start with What's Bred in the Bone.

Try "The Magus" by J. Fowles - the plot is so involving that you won't be able to stop until you know the truth in the end. Though the book is rather long. It is really very interesting, but not just a detective story - intellectual fiction.
