It depends some cars keys are coded in which case you can only get it from the dealer. If it isn't the coded key you could try some locksmiths but even they can't do all keys.

I had to pay £60 to have my spare key "coded" at local Vauxhall dealership. As this is a simple affair and I had the key, I can only think its a con and should be stopped.
Complain strongly to Honda. Tell them its a scam and way too expensive (even if you have to get a new key cut plus coding) and that it will influence what you tell people about Honda and your future car choices.
Good luck, stand up for your rights.

I got a key from Ebay for £25 for my Ford Probe. I didn't set the code and the day arrived when I lost my original key. Four attempts later (half an hour each time) and the car started. Thought I'd better switch off and try it again just to make sure the code was set properly and it wouldn't start. It was just a 'get you home' key. One use and thats it. So my advice is don't buy one from Ebay. Scrap - yard?

It is a rip off, but you might have to end up paying it. Modern keys have electronic transponders, some with rolling codes (with change every time you use it, so thieves cannot "grab" it using electronic devices).
These have to be programmed to coordinate with the locks on your car. The systems can be so advanced that a locksmith may not be able to help you.

Yes - you could try a local reputable locksmith. They can sometimes provide all sorts of remotes and car-keys much cheaper than the dealer. I got my Ford Mondeo mondeo keys from them at less than 50% the price of Ford. Give it a go.

Not sure about there, but here in Mexico it's cheaper to get the locks changed.
£170 for a key seems exorbitant to me.

Easy Peasy, just get any fob from the same model car off ebay, then just find a recoding specialist. They're common (for the very reason your asking) and easily found in yellow pages or on yahoo, they normally charge about £30 to £50 depending on the car.

Try checking with a good local locksmith some of them have the tools to make you a spare key from the one that has a transponder. I had one done in Chesterfield for £48.00

Go through the Honda Corporation. Dealerships are con artists out to take as much money as they can from you.
