The Welfare System mus not be abandoned because it is a program for those who will suffer from sudden loss of properties or jobs. It is a valid exercise of the police power of the state to provide security of the people from poverty.

Number 1 the disable people are not on welfare. They are on social security. Very different from welfare. The problem with welfare is it has become a career for some people. I understand that stuff happens and people end up on welfare through no choice of thier own. No one should be on welfare for more then a year. Nobody should be on welfare more the 5 years in thier life time. This way there is no people who are professional welfare recipants. Any one on welfare should go on training to get better jobs, to get jobs.
I agree stuff happens however you don't give a man fish but you teach him how to fish so he can continue to provide for himself.

I heard Paul Harvey say that if the US took all the money that is collected for Welfare recipients for one year and wrote them a one time check, the amount would make every one of them a millionaire. I think it's high time to get rid of welfare and replace it with work assistance funding. If a recipient has a job, any job and is making even a meager wage, then assistance should be provided to bring them up to an acceptable standard of living. But having people collect while they sit on their Keesters, using the fact that they have to take care of their kids instead of work, well that's just a load of crap.

There are a lot of people who take advantage of the system and that angers us tax payers. I suggest we re-work the welfare to where we suppliment the income of people who work. A head of household who works 35-40 hours per week (documented by paychecks) gets the equivilent of welfare to bring the household income up to the poverty line. Those making more than the poverty line (based on the number of dependants) will recieve no help
A documented case of welfare aid should be offered a $5000 tax credit for up to 5 years for each year they recieve no welfare at all.

You're on "WELFARE" are'nt you ? Image that, no welfare, you mean people would have to work like when they first came over here, You mean like when people were proud to work ? I'll NEVER BE on welfare, even if I have to clean toilets to avoid it, If you are disabled, thats one thing but, if you're a mental patient, using drugs, and are too lazy to work, thats your problem. KEEP ON WORKING HARD, MILLIONS ON WELFARE DEPEND ON YOU ! If you're on welfare, you should hang you're head low, and stop making up excuses in your head of "Why it's O.K., to be on welfare" Have some pride, don't be a useless slob that NOBODY respects. There is a Turkish dude that pumps gas by me, I'm pretty sure he's illegal, this guy works 7 days a week teathered to the gas pump, he open's up the place at 5am and goes home at 10 pm, he occasionally gets time off for a day to do laundry, etc. This guy REALLY breaks his asss to make it in life the best way that he can. I really respect this guy, and often take some dinner to him, he works HARD, so do I, If I eat Steak, HE EATS STEAK !

Well, in St Pete FL - we have people who are fourth generation welfare recipients - nobody in the family has done a thing for 60 years.....
and yet we have paid thru the nostrils for them to drink beer and go to the beach at their leisure....
I know of a person who could have gotten a scholarship in drama to ANY Florida university - their High School teacher had that many connections (full ride) - but they chose to be pregnant at graduation to start their family - each kid has a different father - now the take home pay (several years ago) was $2,400/month to breed
yeah, I am for rewriting welfare - let's get rid of the abusers

touchy subject...
however welfare was established to be a privilege not a right. designed for a single working parent to help house, feed, and clothe their child until they could make ends meet.
... now it has become a shame and a down right mess. while single mothers keep popping out kids, other hard working americans are picking up the bill and taking care for this child.
i guess it comes down to personal morals... i don't agree with welfare, because the selection process to get it is too easy.... and it is going to all the wrong people!
and as for the disabled people needing financial aid, it is called Workman's comp! its for workers disabled on the job....

You're on welfare aren't you? They can keep welfare and ask volunteers to pay into it. I'll never receive welfare even if I lose my job because I wasn't born on welfare. People who need welfare or food stamps are turned down all the time because we have to support the lazy 20somethings who don't know they're supposed to work after high school, they're doing what mom taught them.

Too many people are on welfare because they have no personal responsibility - people need to take charge of their situations and act accordingly. Why should the government be responsible to take care of you and yout situation. You got into it - you get out of it.

We can go back to the way things were when families & churches took care of their own. That will bring responsibility to the handouts.
