His visit is religious. The reason for his visit is not to mend bridges with islam. Pope John Paul II was invited by the Orthodox Patriarch, however due to his death Pope Benedict XVI accepted the invitation. Therefore his visit is to mend bridges with Orthodox Christianity.
Not every action nowadays is between Christianity and Islam, sometimes its about Christianity and Christianity.
The Pope doesn't interfere with a political process of EU membership. When he was Cardinal Ratzinger he voiced an opinion about membership, but hasnt mentioned it since.
He can only talk about things that affect his communion, the people of the Catholic church or moral issues such as war and the fight against poverty.
As for Turkish membership of the EU, the main stubbling points are Cyprus, Human Rights and economic and political stability. Religion has nothing to do with it. (or at least shouldn't)

It is a political one but has little to do with the membership in the EU. The Pope has to mend bridges with the Islamic community and Turkey is the most receptive and benign of the Islamic countries. He is doing this for his own prestige which was badly damaged with the Muslim when he used the ancient quotes about how evil the Islamic religion is.

The visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Turkey is always related to religion and not politics. It is for Catholicism and other religions to have a peaceful co-existence.

its religon and politics rolled together........ smoothing things over still after the way the muslims reacted (again) to what The Pope said and probably paving the way for Turkey to join the EU
The EU must have completely lost the plot if they let Turkey join, even Saddam Hussein said its a bad move and couldnt beleive the EU were considering it.
Turkey is a muslim country and we all know what that could mean

Turkey's membership will happen no matter what the Pontiff does.
Personally I believe he is visiting to try and recover some of the creditability he lost earlier in the year.

for sure. He instructed Israelis that "the brutal extermination of Jews through the godless Nazi regime is not forgotten or denied" yet he ignores the brutal extermination of the pagans through the Christians, besides because the brutal extermination of the Palestinains through the Jews. he's a complete hypocrite... Christians and Jews can kill anybody they prefer, yet in the journey that they get killed that is meant to be a huge tragedy
