Our bathroom cieling is starting to grow a mold that looks verysimiliar to black mold. The bathroom is very poorly ventilated and I'm pretty sure that they used the wrong kind of drywall to prevent this kind of occurence. Three of my roommates have gotten sick with symptoms that are constant with those of black mold exposure. What should my first steps be in either filing a complaint or lawsuit on this?

no windows to open. was not caused by having a dirty bathroom. it is on the cieling, which isn't somewhere that typically gets normal cleanings, and if it is black mold there is no way in heck i'm going to touch it. wrong type of drywall was used in the cieling.

Notify your landlord about the black mold and request for its removal. If there is no action from the landlord, file a complaint in court for its removal citing it as hazardous to health so that the court will order your landlord to remove the black mold.

You have two very nice answers already. I will add one. Clean your bathroom as you clean yourself. Daily. Often. With soap and hot water. Three of your roommates? How many do you have? How many people are spreading their fungus in that bathroom? Can't each of them clean up after themselves? The bathroom is poorly ventilated? Open the window or leave the door open. Filing a complaint or lawsuit? That is the one thing you should not even think of doing. What on earth for? Clean your environment and make it healthy -- why should you even think about bringing someone else into your problem? Take responsibility and get your roommates to act as a community.

Been There! Teens and long hot showers.
Spray the ceiling heavily with bleach to kill the mold.
spray where you don't see it also, because it is there.
go to the paint store and get a can of Kilz as a primer.
while you are there, ask for bathroom paint that won't get moldy. I don't remember the name of it but I've used it several times and it does not get moldy.
Don't forget to open a window when doing all this.
Open it a crack while showering too.
Good Luck

If it is truly black mold, it would be very dangerous to touch it! (That's why the pros wear the biohazard suits when cleaning it up!) Personally, I'd contact an attorney and take good clear photos to show him or her. You can probably Google "toxic mold attorney [your state]" to find one in your area.
