Last night I watched a horrible movie which demonized the drug heroin, while at the same time everyone was drinking hard liquor and smoking tobacco -- The Man With the Golden Arm.

In this 1955 film, Frank Sinatra got off the bus after being released from prison. He was sent there because he used heroin. His first action was to walk across the street to a bar and drink hard liquor. This may sound off-topic, but I bring it up to answer your question. Who am I to judge which rock band took "WAY" too many drugs? And how do you define "taking WAY too many drugs"?

Based on their music, I don't think any rock band took way too
many drugs. Overdosing is a free-time activity, not really affecting the music, but CAUSED by the FACT that certain drugs have been deemed evil, therefore illegal, and the user has no idea of purity or what was added.

Lots of musicians have taken too many drugs. I remember when Eric Clapton used to pass out and had to be put in rehab all the time, but his music didn't sound "druggy". His was heroin. It doesn't make you very creative or alive.

I guess I would go with the Grateful Dead. They always had acid everywhere. All the San Fran bands were that way at that time, the Airplane and Country Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service. All with pyschedelics.

and Jimi Hendrix. I am not sure what he took, but it sounded great!

The Doors. I'm not sure which drugs, but I've never understood Jim Morrison's lyrics and just his life in general. Strange man. Genius + drugs = Jim Morrison

Nothing strange in his music, but Ozzy Osbourne smoke the "Sweet Leaf' way too much.

Jim Morrison's lyrics were great, except when he must've been stoned out of his mind on pot, and got started on those ridiculous rhymes that went on forever. Take a long holiday/let your children play comes right to mind.

I'd say Nirvana, and I think they took speedballs and X. I still love them though.
