Everybody who answered "yes" is totally WRONG. A computer virus is just a program. Programs cannot damage contemporary hardware. (Decades in the past, some obsolete monitors, disk drives and printers could be damaged programmatically - but they are no longer around.)

However, a program (including a computer virus) can cause a particular kind of software damage which can force you to return your computer to the factor - i.e., you won't be able to repair it yourself. In particular it can wipe the FLASH BIOS (this cannot be done on all computer models - but on many it can be done). The result will be that your computer will act pretty much as a brick - it won't boot; even the text messages that normally appear when you turn it (displaying available memory, installed devices, etc.) on won't appear any more.

The only way to repair such damage will be to remove the BIOS chip (nearly impossible on some laptops where the chip is soldered instead of socketed) and re-flash it using an EEPROM programmer - a device you most probably don't have.

The CIH and some other computer viruses do this. It's still not "hardware damage" - but it comes pretty close.
