I worked in Domestic Violence for 16 years. I retired in 1996. Some things may have changed but I'm sure we still have a lot of the same problems. Law enforcement was a problem. If a woman had a protective order it was up to her to report each time it was broken, meaning when the perpetrator tried to make contact with the victim. She, most women, aren't consistent and allow the contact and then the next time they want it enforced. Rightly so the law doesn't take the woman seriously because in most cases the woman returns several times before she decides she has had enough. Domestic violence is complicated. There isn't enough space to write down. Let me refer you to the women's shelter in your area. I know they will be glad to help you. They also have brochures with info on the cycle of violence and many more with information. We have the laws but since the laws are not enforced we have to re-write laws. It was a never ending battle. You could also find out from the court system when the protective orders go before the judge. You can visit the court room to see how it works.I was the director of the Domestic Violence Program in our town. There is so much to it that it took about a year of on the job training to be qualified.

Look under Community Resources in your phone book for their Domestic Violence Hot Line phone number. Contact them. Most shelters need volunteer's.

Also need to add that when the protective order is served on the perpitrator that is when it is dangerous. That is when most homicide occur. Hope this is helpful. Way more for you to research for a great paper.

First let me say that I am completely against domestic violence.
Perhaps you can look to history and culture for your opposing arguments. For example, I have heard that the old phrase "a good rule of thumb" comes from a law that a man could not beat his wife with any thing thicker than his thumb. I'm not sure how true that is but it at least gives us an indication that it has been socially acceptable to beat one's wife. Also if you look at some older movies, ones that are coming to mind at the moment are "the three faces of eve", ad "The color purple", you can see strong male characters that have hit or threaten to hit their wives.
If you look at culture, There are mostly male-dominated societies in the world. The idea that the man is the one that is (or should be) in control, the head of the house, the king of his castle, etc. has led some to believe that beatings are the only way to keep women in submission. If the woman is the reflection of the man and the way he runs his home, when she acts poorly he must punish her. If he cannot control his woman, can he control business affairs, etc. ? Some men may see hitting as a right, part of their traditional and cultural inheritance. perhaps some see it as "education" for women who are "naturally inferior in understanding, unworthy of trust, given to passions, etc"

Again I am completely against this but perhaps it has pointed you in a direction where you can find more information for your paper.

I don't think domestic violence has a justifiable side. I think you need to choose a different topic where there is a clear pro and con list. I think the only people that believe there is an opposing side are the convicts that are the abusers.

I didn't know there were any opposing arguments. How can domestic violence (or any violence) be acceptable?
