TOp 5 strictly speaking Rock n Roll.

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Jimmy Page
3. Pete Townsend
4. Duane Allman
5. Eric Clapton/Brian May

...because they're all amazing and can write amazing songs...
that's why no satriana, vai, etc...they are studio wiz kidz who can tap a million miles a minute...but to make one a legendary guitar player, one has to have his own taste and be able to write good songs that capture not only his playing style, but his essence as an artist.
others to mention: Eddie Van Halen, Satriana, Vai, Chuck Berry, Jeff Beck, Peter Green, C.Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Chet Atkins, The Edge, Randy Rhodes, Zack Wylde, Slash, Tony Iommi, Kirk Hammet, Django Reinhart, Mike Bloomfield, Mark Nopfler, Angus Young, Neil Young, Bo Diddley, B.B.King.

...But the best guitar player in the world is probably some latin/flamenco/classical player, who's 80 years old, playin on his porch in the mountains of Bolivia.

In no specific order: Joe Satriani: For being satch, and bringing an obscene point of virtuosity to instrumental music. Van Halen: not partial to the band, however the guitar artwork on most of the songs is dazzling Buckethead: he's in basic terms an all around stable guitarist who can bypass from acoustic strumming to distorted thrash in an on the spot Jimmi Hendrix: His contributions to this variety of rock and roll are uncontrivertable, plus he grew to become into too undesirable *** for a left surpassed guitar. Billy Corgan mixed with James Iha: the superb guitarrists, on my own or mutually? not on your life, yet their kinds of play have been so... confluent, that they extraordinarily plenty governed my early teen years.
