Maybe the face is made of quartz. Quartz is a hard substance and can actually scratch glass. Nope, I was wrong, here's what wikipedia says "A quartz clock is a timepiece that uses an electronic oscillator which is made up by a quartz crystal to keep precise time. This crystal oscillator creates a signal with very precise frequency. Usually some form of digital logic counts the cycles of this signal and provides a numeric time display, usually in units of hours, minutes, and seconds, that a human can read."

Yes it means that the watch contains a quartz crystal. It is written on the watch because people believe that a watch with a quartz crystal is better than one without. Even battery operated watches often have a quartz crystal inside, sometimes, they say it gives better accuracy. Maybe they are right....but we get conned so often in this world that I couldn't say for sure that it is true...just that people believe it is.

Well, first of all, mechanical watches will not have "Quartz" written on them, however most of the watches made today do contain a quartz crystal which oscillates at some particular frequency, VERY reliably, and as it does so, it generates an electrical signal which is used as the "heartbeat" of the watch.

Yes, it is basically telling you that the watch is battery operated. Mechanical and automatic watches won't say quartz on them. A quartz crystal resonates at a frequency that is a very good approximation for a second.

The word appears on watches that use an electronic movement regulated by a quartz crystal. Such watches are far more accurate (factor of 100) than mechanical watches, but do have the disadvantage of requiring batteries.

Because an electrically charged quartz crystal, using peizoelectric effect,is used to power all such watches.

Totally related - quartz watches use quartz crystals to keep time. http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae559.cfm has an explanation of how that works.

quartz crystal is a piezoelectric material which is a basically good
for pressure transducers . in the watches it is used to regulate
mechanical motion by the electical mode ,,
and electrical is much better that mechanical..
so its is used in it n quartz is written..
