Your Faith. There's a famous story (which you may know) called 'The Silent Sermon'.
A Pastor was concerned that one of his flock had not been attending Church lately. He visited him at home and found him sitting in front of the fire, which was burning brightly in the grate.
He told the man that he had been missed at services lately, and asked if there was a reason for his non attendance. The man replied that he had been very busy lately and that he believed hat you did not have to go to Church regularly to be a good Christian. The Pastor thought for a moment, then, in silence, leaned toward the fire and picked up the fire tongs. He lifted a brightly burning coal from the fire and laid it on the hearth. Both men watched for a few minutes. The coal slowly ceased to burn and the glow from the ember began to die. After a few minutes, the Pastor picked up the coal with the tongs and replaced it in the fire. It very soon re-lit and began to burn brightly again. At this point the Pastor simply rose from his chair and left. The man he visited was in Church next Sunday.

A conscience. We need to exercise our conscience andlisten to it or it will stop working or in your words; die. The opposite of what you are asking, the part where using something keeps it vital and alive is incorporated into this truth. When we listen to our conscience and follow what it tells us, we are keeping it supple and alive. The teacher I learned this from described this as keeping our conscience tender, because we toughen our will when we don't listen to it and like a tough hide or a thick bell...it doesn't ring out like it would if it was healthy and not calloused. It is like the conscience is one side of the drumskin and the will is the other. They can't be separated...and if we don't use them...they breakdown and die.

It is well known that if you do not start a car or use it for a long period, everything in it, including the tires, will go to ruin. And what about houses. Left unused for years, they will eventually just either cave in or rot away. This, of course, can extend to the concept of family. If one is away for long periods, the family will die. Contrary to popular opinion, absence does not make the heart grow fonder.
