Do you think you should just give them the answer or give them resources to get the answer for themselves? Especially if all they had to do was type a word in the search bar instead of a whole question in Yahoo Answers!

Update: Thanks to everyone who has answered. yes, i agree sometimes a nudge toward the right answer or an explanation ot interpretaion is needed. Hve to judge each one individually. But, i always try to give a resource too, and encourage them to read for themselves. Today there was one asking,"What 2 oceans meet at the tip of Africa?" that required no explanation, just a look at the map. I gave the website for a world map. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Well, I have a method for this...
- If it's a question that shows they've genuinely thought about their homework and are having difficulty with understanding a part of it, I'll give them a nice answer
- If it's an "I'm a lazy slacker can you do my homework for me?" question, then either ignore it and give it a thumbs down, or if I'm in the mood, it can be fun to overload them with info on the topic, explaining it in university detail or something... So that they'll (a) have to sort through the info and (b) hopefully realise how much there is to actually know, or how interesting it can be, or maybe just how stupid they are... whatever makes them get off their bums and do their own work.
But yes, it's pretty damn annoying... especially those who have no shame and ask multiple homework questions under a category all in a row....

While i agree that the majority are seeking the easy way to get answers to their homework, there are a few who can better understand when some one either restates or relates the material to them. And its for those few that i take the time to find the answer for. Because maybe in someway I am helping them, maybe they honestly don't know where to look. If I can help one legitimately then its worth the effort. I remember being stuck before without the aid of Al Gore's greatest invention (Internet). I wish i would have had a last option outlet to go to at that time. And to be honest, i enjoy looking up the answers and reading the material for myself.

I just give them the resources to answer it on their own. Why do someone else's homework when they are too lazy to try to at least google their question before having the Answers community spend time on their work? Not that I'm against helping, as I wouldn't be here otherwise... but... there are boundaries. How are they going to learn if we just give them the answers they need? How does simply being told an answer learning? Does this teach them anything? YES! It teaches that you can slide through life by hoping and preying that someone else has the information you need.. or is it brainpower?

Give them the resources to get it themselves or just give them enough to help them find the whole answer. If it is a real easy answer to find and they want a whole lot of information like they sometimes want just give them a bogus answer. It is no more then they deserve if they are so naive to believe that they can get something for nothing. I beleive it will cause them to think twice before trying to cheat on their homework again. ←

Give them the resources to find the answer for themselves -- because the only way one will learn what you need to learn is by Having to DO THE WORK yourself!

I agree with Tony on this one. I don't mind helping. If I did mind, I wouldn't come onto the site in the first place. Learning is still learning, whether you do it from a book or from reading an answer on here.

I do not mind helping someone even though they can use a search engine. I have to believe that I can explain something I am familiar with better than professionally written articles. Or maybe I can supply a new twist. It does not bother me to help someone.
