did Hitler really murder civilians execution style, or were the deaths in the course of battle (war,POW)?

The Holocaust refers specifically to the attempted genocide of the Jewish race (but, as noted already, other races/religions/etc were also victims of the Holocaust). So it was definitely not military deaths.

After conquering an area or country, the SS would be sent in to find and round up all Jews. They were then shipped off to the various concentration camps where they were systematically killed.

As noted by other people, Hitler never did any of the killing myself. He was the leader. Why dirty his hands when he can get other people to do it for him?

First, it must be noted that Hitler did not murder civilians. These mass murders/exterminations were conducted by SS officers, armed forces troops, reserve police battalions, and their ilk.

While some were killed in the course of war (although not necessarily in the heat of battle or in a POW camp), the vast majority (millions of people) were murdered in extermination, labor, and concentration camps, as well in town massacres such as in Jozefow. Of course, this, too was all a part of the Nazi war--after all, Europe was to be "cleansed" of "impurities" such as Poles, Jews, Gypsies, etc.

There is no (valid) evidence of a direct order (no "smoking gun") in which Hitler ordered the Holocaust to be initiated. This does not, however, diminish the vileness of both the reign of the Third Reich and the implementation of the Holocaust.

There were several horrific methods of killing civilians. While part of the murders happened in the course of war (these should be labeled war crimes or atricities), over time a system of killing developed which was almost an "industry". The concentration camps ranged from places with "only" a high rate of deaths, to extermination camps which were actually factories of death, with installations designed for the most effective murdering of many people.
Or, in short, he did both big style.

I have visited one of the concentration camps, in Dackau, Germany

It appeared that the execution was systematic, well planned and almost like a factory style. For example, the route what the person was made to go, was like in stages. First, the room where the clothes had to be taken off for "washing time". then, to the room where "shower" was, door was closed, gas showers opened, and then, after a while, room ventilations were opened. after that, the bodies were carried to the owen one by one. there was a line of 4 owens next to the "gas shower room". the bodies were laid to the metalplate in trays, body to owen, hatches closed, and after a while, tray out, and new body to trayplate.
ashes were emptyed a couple times a day from the back of the owen.

horrible place, I tell ya
