Well I am 17 weeks pregnant and was recently diagnosed with BV it was really very uncomfortable. My husband is away so it is unnecessary for him to be treated and I mysteriously developed it by myself somehow. I read that it can be more common during pregnancy because women generally have a lot more discharge and sometimes the bacteria builds up and then makes it easier for an infection to occur.

My doctor gave me some safe antibiotics and I am feeling much better now. When the discharge is clear or milky looking then it's perfectly normal. If you are feeling worried about an infection and constantly checking it then it could be sore from that. It can also be sore if you are not lubricated enough while making love. Also the vagina and cervical area is constantly changing during pregnancy and that can make you feel uncomfortable sometimes too. If it is an infection the discharge would be yellowish and have a strong smell. Use flushable hypo-allergenic wipes to keep the area clean and if it continues then see your doctor about it.

Bacterial vaginosis is pretty common. It is not thought to cause miscarriage, although it has been implicated in premature rupture of the membranes.

It is impossible to say if you are feeling discomfort from pregnancy or a recurrence of the infection. BV has very few symptoms usually. The two most common are thin watery discharge and a foul odor, most commonly after sex. There is not usually any itching or burning unless very severe or complicated with another infection at the same time - like having a yeast infection on top of BV.

It is important to understand that unlike chlamydia or similar sexually transmitted infections, yeast and the bacteria that cause BV grow there naturally all the time. Just sometimes things get out of balance and they over-grow. This is when we say you have BV or a yeast "infection". The key to getting rid of BV is to replenish the GOOD flora (bacteria) that naturally occurs in the vagina. These organisms feed on the bad stuff, keeping the levels very low. Antibiotics kill off the bad AND the good. Look for a good brand of probiotics. Ask at a health food store or look on-line. These will replenish the good bacteria and help prevent future infections.

Good luck

BV is not a sexually transmitted disease for those who think it. it can be transmitteed sexually but it is also cause byb changes in soaps douching ( that's why docs say not to douche) It is also caused but dirty hands and other things.
