Why do most cats and dogs go nutty when you scratch the small of their back, near their tails.?

My dog dances, my cat licks her arm profusely, my grandparents dog licks air. Why do they get all weird when you scratch them there?

Hi there..the "common wisdom" among breeders is that this is an "accupressure" spot connected to the cat's sex response system.

If a queen is in heat, firm pressure on this spot (a hollow on the side of the body just in from the base of the tail) will eventually cause the queen to yelp and roll (which is what they do when they are bred); they also attempt to swat their partner at this point, so be prepared or bring bandaids :-). A few days after this, the queen will usually go out of heat, just as if she's been bred. Breeders sometimes use this trick to take a queen out of heat if for some reason she's not to be bred this time around.

Different cats/dogs (whole or altered) have different reactions to being touched or petted near this spot -- some, particularly females do not like to be touched within 3 - 4 inches of it, and will nip at you if you try it. Others love it.

There is a nerve bundle at the base of the tail on both cats and dogs. When you scratch on that spot it stirs up the nerve endings and that's why the animal seems to go a little crazy when you're scratching it.

in this area, the nerve endings are a sprint greater sensitve (i think of I study the spinal twine followers out into something called the cauda equina at this element-it would not proceed into the tail) and diverse cats have diverse ranges of sensitivity to being touched or scratched right here.

it there itchy spot!!!! my dog spins in circles, unless hes lying down then he kicks his leg really fast!! its so funny!!! its like how humans like to get massages, or when a little kid gets tickeled.
