a vertical line has undefined slope because all points on the line have the same x coordinates. A vertical line is parallel to the y axis.

Ordered Pair

(3, 5)(3, 2 )

m = y₂- y₁/ x ₂- x₁

m = 5 - 2/3 - 3

m = 3/0 . . .Undefined Slope

Undefined Slope
No Slope

The "slope" of a vertical line. A vertical line has undefined slope because all points on the line have the same x-coordinate. As a result the formula used for slope has a denominator of 0, which makes the slope undefined..

the slope of a vertical line. Slope is rise over run, or the change in Y-values divided by the change in X-values. Becuase the X-value is always the same in a vertical line, the slope will be some number divided by zero, and that is undefined

An undefined slope is usually one where the "run" is equal to zero.

Note that slope is equal to rise over run, or rise divided by run, or rise/run. If run is equal to zero, then rise/run is undefined, because any value over zero is undefined.

In terms of lines, the only line with an undefined slope are vertical lines (i.e. x = c, where c is some constant).

undefined slope is a line which is parallel to the Y - axis.

for example:

given that the coordinate A and B are A (X1, Y1), B (X2, Y2)

slope = (Y1 - Y2)/(X1 - X2)

if (X1 - X2) = 0 or parallel to the Y - axis,

(Y1 - Y2)/(X1 - X2) = undefined.
