Absolutely. The continual onslaught of mind-numbingly redundant shows has been a major factor in the dumbing down of an entire generation.
When given the choice of thinking and making intelligent, considered, rational conversation or sitting down to watch Sex in the City or any of the plethora of other television shows which do not require any more brain power than sitting down and keeping your heart beating, most people will choose the latter. The sad fact of the matter is that there are far to many people who are just plain lazy and would if given the choice, pick the alternative that requires the lowest amount of thinking and/or doing.
It is a horrible condemnation of the Human Race when this has become the case. there are however people who still choose to exert themselves either mentally or physically in the pursuit of their betterment, and for those people i am truly thankful.

Yes I think so. Look at how most of us spend our time. It's either the television or the internet. When I was a child we had one hour every evening where we all read a book. After that hour we all sat around and chatted about what we read. At first I didn't like it because it was hard for me to sit still, but I loved reading and I still do. What I see happen often is people put their kids in front of the television like the tv was a babysitter.

You have to take the good things it gives, FEW , but some are good. And we should not give it too much importance, like: "as seen /heard on TV", this is the worst problem, I think, not TV itself. Personally I only watch documentaries, news, some good OLD films and some chat shows to see different points of view, but NO REALITY SHOWS or stupid things like that. These are the cause of degradation, yes, they are!

Well, you've got more brain waves flying around in your head staring at a blank wall than watching TV. Forget where I read that, in college, though, in a reputable research publication.
You tell me.
