Laptops are limited in the customizing area. After you receive your laptop from the manufacturer you can add more RAM, change the HD, and that's really about it. Changing the processor is possible, but it can be somewhat difficult. Graphics are limited in laptops because of the space issue. There are only a couple manufacturers that have upgradeable video cards (not very cost efficient). If you have a little extra cash ($3,000) go for an Alienware. If you're looking to save some cash look into a HP, Gateway, or Dell (go down the list if you don't find something you like). You should be able to build a very capable laptop for $1500-$2000.

It all depends on what you plan to do with your laptop. For games, go for a desktop replacement (video card of at least 256mb) with a dual core processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2). If you have any more questions just ask.

I also recommend getting a Mac; for a more "powerful" laptop you'd probably want to stay on the MacBook Pro side rather than the consumer-level MacBook. Whether you want to run Windows, Linux or OS X apps it's got you covered pretty darn comfortably.

HOWEVER. Please be forewarned that Apple is notorious for charging too much for extra RAM. Instead of ordering it with 2GB pre-installed, instead you may want to order it with as little RAM as possible, and order less expensive RAM (i.e. from Kensington) to be installed after the fact.

Sony Vaio. These are pay for what you get though. Their cheap lines are well, cheap peices of junk. But with the higher lines such as the SZ series, these are built very well. If you get the right model you wont have to upgrade, its already maxed out from Sony.

http://www.apple.com/store as well as http://www.dell.com allow for customizations. You'll want to order with 2GB RAM, separate video memory of at least 128MB, as much hard drive space as you can afford, minimum of two USB ports, and a DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM drive (sometimes called a "combo-drive"). As far as the size of display, while a 15" or 17" display sounds nice, lugging them around gets old. You also want it to run as long as possible on batter so that's a spec to consider.
