There are some great songs that'd be perfect if they were silent at certain parts. How can I do that with just a basic Windows XP and it's software?

that is pretty basic audio editing but without any pro audio editing software it can be a tricky. I think the easiest way to do this would be the brute force method. Use the windows sound recorder to record the song directly into your mic from another audio source like a cd player. Then just mute that cd player when the the part of the song comes up that you don't like. However ther eis a trick with the windows sound recorder that it only will record 60 secons at a time, there is w ay to get around this by first pressing record waiting 60 seconds and then pressing record waiting another 60 seconds, and keep doing this until you have the amount of time you want.

Agree - turn it off if you don't like it.
