Actually, Nixon bugged the Oval Office his main meeting place and all conversations that took place there. He wasn't bugging himself but recording all conversations with anyone to review later.

Nixon was extremely paranoid, that is a well documented fact. He bugged himself because he never considered it could be used against him, he thought he was untouchable. He bugged conversations so he had leverage against the other people in the conversation. If they tried to "defect" he had evidence to keep them in line.
