The Canadian government almost unanimously voted to give Quebec nation status within a united Canada. Set aside the fact that this can and probably will spell the end to the greatest place on Earth. All the provinces in Canada are as different from each other as the next one, heck even different parts of some provinces are different from each other ie. Northern and Southen Ontario for one. But this simple truth remains Canada is the greatest nation on Earth because we are different and despite all of our differences we are a united nation. Strong and Free.

It's pure semantics, while Quebec is not a nation within a united Canada it is not legally a nation. Not even legally a nation within Canada. What this effectively accomplished was giving Quebec a fancy title and a new distinction.

Even as such I am offended that the government would bestow a higher status on some of it's citizen than others. Creating a division in the country will only serve to offend most Canadians while pacifying a few.

I think we should all be a little upset that out government recognizes some it it's citizens as more unique or important than other.

I have nothing against french Canadians, they are a unique culture, just as the first nations, just as some east coast communities. Canada is full of varying cultures.

I also wonder how this applies to the french Canadian communities outside of Quebec. There are many scattered throughout Canada, should they be granted nation status as well?
Should they secede from their current province and join Quebec?

How will this be handled within Quebec's large anglophone community. Is their status being diminished because they are not members of the french community? Many have ancestry dating back to the inception of Quebec and Canada.

Not to mention First Nations persons. Will they have diminished recognition withing Quebec regardless of them being unquestionably the first inhabitants of the land. Also with them having a drastically unique and beautiful culture, will this make it difficult for them to carry on tradition and have recognition through the "nation" of Quebec?. Is there room to celebrate other cultures within a Franco centric Quebec?

I am a little troubled by how ill though out this bill was and what little time the government gave the Canadian population for voice their opinion on such an important matter. Today I am one annoyed Canadian.

to preserve quebec's culture they need to remain inside Canada. Its the reason they joined in the first place way back in 1867 and remains the reason they should remain. If quebec became independant and had to negotiate trade agreements with NAFTA and WTO you can bet being just 8 million people in a sea of 300 million north americans they would hold no weight. In Canada the cereal boxes et al are all printed french/english and they have the right to trial and government service in their own language anywhere in Canada and the right to draconian language laws inside their province. As a small part of a greater north america union its doubtful they would get any of those concessions and would soon be assimilated culturally and linguistically. IMHO

I agree with you, except that a NATION is not a state, therefore Ottawa will continue to
be and remain the central government of all Canada including the Quebec NATION
unless la belle Provence, some day, totally separate from Canada . lets hope it will not
happen......

I haven't heard all of the particulars, but from a neighbor from the south, I have to say, that's REALLY messed up. Why did they declare part of the country "partially" it's own country? In fact, why did they do it in the first place?

This will almost certainly cause problems. Problems in trade, problems in travel (international and domestic), problems in your economy (higher taxes?), as well as the fact that you'll have several of your representatives to Parliament arguing all time about this, and no real work will be done.

I'm sorry... On the other hand, you're government will become just as screwed up with unnecessary spending, just like the U.S. Looks like you got one of those leaders that looked promising, but then did something very stupid.

If Quebec had a referendum just like in 1995, it wouldn't succeed. So why give them a nation status in Canada.

I think maybe YOU have lost your mind.
Canada did not give Quebec any independent status; Quebec is still no more than a province. You should really check where you're getting your information.

Yes. Quebec is a Nation of Canada living in "British Fog". Just like the U.S.A is a Independant Nation "Living in British Fog". Yeah, they are independant Nations with their own culture but are still blind to the fact. We just have to remind them that their ways are respected and that we acknowledge them.
