Here are a dozen: The best American novel is Huckleberry Finn, by Samuel Clemens, writing under his pen name of Mark Twain. Another that's well worth reading is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway (one of his shortest!). Of Mice and Men and/or (if you can stand another long one) Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck are both masterpieces. Some others, in no particular order: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Animal Farm by George Orwell Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll (Dr. Charles Dodgson) Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk

You might enjoy reading one of S.E. Hinton's novels. Films have been made about the novels - but the writing is good and the books are really interesting to read:
- The Outsiders
- Tex
- Rumble Fish
- That Was Then, This Is Now
- Taming The Star Runner

'Beaches' covers the drama and boy-girl romance elements (one of the two main characters is a singer/actress), but it is mostly a 'best friends' story between two girls. You might be interested in Frank Rich's 'Ghost Light: A Memoir', though. It is an autobiography of a gentleman who grew up on the Broadway scene, and it does go into some stuff about his love life.

-norwegian wood by haruki murakami (set in the 60s)
-wonder boys by michael chabon (a bit of a strech on the theme, but close enough, i think.)
-tunnel vision by keith lowe (not the best book, but it's fun and an easy day read, even at 400 pages)
-the f-ck up by arthur nersessian (but only if you want to get depressed)
-in search of respect: selling crack in el barrio by anthony bourgois (true story. more of a guy trying to keep his girl while following his dreams. one of the best ethnographies out there. you'll learn a lot about the underground economy yet not get bored AT ALL)
-six degrees of separation by john guare (my favorite book. ok, it's a play, and he's not really trying to "get the girl" but trust me on this one. you'll learn a lot about youself and the human condition)
there are probably books out there that are more true to the theme you're looking for but these are books i have that i enjoyed and i read a lot (not so much, last year of college, no time for fun...)
enjoy!

ISHMAEL
by Daniel Quinn.
NOT a religious book, just so you know.
very unusual and eye opening book. it defies categories. it has influenced many other artists without getting much main-stream recognition. pearl jam did a song inspired by it, the movie "instinct" with anthony hopkins is said to be inspired by the book, though i wouldnt take the movie to be an example of the quality of the book. (the book is amazing while the movie is merely entertaining.) do a search on it and see for yourself. its one of my all time favorites.

There's always Romeo and Juliet. You might like A Walk in the Woods by Nicholas Sparks as well.

Read Pride and Prejudice, or Jane Eyre. If you're looking for melodrama, read Wuthering Heights.
