If you are just starting out and want to work at home on your PC I would choose industries that are expanding - like you hinted at. It has been quoted that an extra 150,000 people join the Internet everyday so ideally a business in this category is ideal. However, the thing with any product is that people will only buy it because they want it - and even then they won't just buy it off anyone!
My experience it that people need to get to know you and trust you before they part with any money and the only way you can do that is to place a system around the product. In other words, you don't just market to them once - you follow up consistently until they buy.
Of course everyone hasn't got the money to set up such a system and this is the very reason most people fail. You can leverage a system but it is difficult to leverage a product without lying about it or hiding the truth!
So, ideally you need to start with a system and place that around your product. It took me a long time to learn that and only now am I beginning to make any money. My product is the Lottery and in europe it is set for huge expansion. The system itself uses a unique twist that capitalises on Internet expansion, paying for the advertising of my lottery product.
The great thing is that the system can be used by anyone for whatever product they wish to promote.

Stay away from Cash Create and other survey Web sites!
It's a waste of time and will cause you unhappiness.
If you choose to get suckered in and sign up to take surveys and receive free trials considered you were warned. The minute you give them your credit card and personal information you have now opened your computer to unwanted cookies on your hard drive, annoying pop-up windows and if you are on a PC you open your computer to viruses that can wipe you out.

If you don't mind assembling crafts at home maybe you should check out www.magicalgift.com I haven't tried it yet (I just ordered a starter kit from them myself and am waiting to get it,) and it won't make you TONS of money, but it's something to consider.
