If you need a phone line, you can't use the phone line while you are online and you need to dial a connection before you can get online, you are using a dial-up modem. (It is usually true that you have to plug in the phone line directly into the back of the PC, but not always)

If you need a phone line, but you can use the phone while you are online, the computer is always online (no need to dial), and you need a separate box, it's probably DSL.

If you use a coax cable (the type of cable that delivers cable to your tv), it is a cable connection. (These will also have a separate box).

If you pay over a $300 a month for service you have a T1 or greater. You probably don't have a T1 or T3, these are usually used for businesses, unless this is a business. Then I doubt you have one unless you are a large business or ISP.
