Our 2nd story guest bathroom toilet gets most of its usage from our 4yr old son...until recently. After a post-#1 flush, the toilet started to make these weird "jackhammer" sounds, freaking my kid out. They were loud and actually made the floor vibrate a little. I went in and flushed again, and nothing happened for a few seconds...then the sound started up again...and stopped. Stupidly(?) I flushed again, and this time nothing happened. DS was covering his ears at this point. This hasn't been a consistent event, so I'm wondering if the problem has just "gone down the pipes" or is there some bigger, more evil, lurking problem that's just going to bite someone in the behind later on (perhaps literally???). I don't think that DS flushed anything down the toilet, but if he did, I would just expect a clog. Any ideas and recommended actions? Anyone deal with this before?

Yes...it may be the fill valve (and replacing it with a Fluidmaster is a great idea, either way, they're great, easy to install, and save water and hassle) but it may also be the backflow/anti-siphon, usually located in the basement/crawl space of your house, or just outside the lower level. Should look *kind of* like a gas valve, with an Allen screw in the center. Try loosening that a bit, and you won't get so much air compression in the remainder of the lines. Just make sure it's not a gas valve...that's big trouble.

Do you have a water softener? If so, was it running when this happened? The plumber who answered earlier is probably right, but when our water softener runs, we can't flush the toilets or run any water because it makes that jackhammer sound as well in the pipes (which is why we've got it set on a timer to run at 2:00 am).

Just one more option!

Gee, a lot of bad answers here. You need to replace your fill valve. This is the device that lets water into your toilet. There is trash in the unit.

This should cost you around $12-$20 at your local home improvement store. I recommend the "fuildmaster 400A" model.

Just follow the instructions and you will be in good shape.

Good Luck!!!

I'm not sure about the air bubble, but whether or not the tank is leaking can easily be determined. Put a couple of drops of food coloring in the tank. If it drips into the bowl, the water in the bottom of the tank will change color. If it does, you've determined that water is dripping from the tank.

You can buy a cooper piece or valve, it's a 4 or 5 inch tube that you solder into the water line. It is air in the water line. It's cheap and easy to install.

Air in the pipes perhaps? Have them snaked out and maybe replace the toilet.

This sound just happened at my house. Has it happened to you again? Did you find out what the problem was?
