I'm going to wear a black and gold dress (majority black, but with gold at the top that really stands out), and I have a fair complexion. I was thinking smokey eyes...but i'm afraid it might be slightly harsh...

I say go for the smokey. Especially if this is an evening affair. Test it out first though if you are worried. Put the dress on and do all of your makeup in the evening and see what you think. If you like it, great. Go for it the night of the event. Play with it and have fun. Have a few friends over and all of you do your makeup and see what everyone thinks about the others. You can also do what I did. I had a professional do mine. I am 37 years old and when I went to my proms and winter formals I always went to Mary Kay cosmetics. I would tell them exactly what my dress looked like and they did a WONDERFUL job with it. A few times I even brought the dress in with me so they could get a better idea as to the look I was going for. I suggest that. Go to a cosmetics store in your area or even the department stores in your local mall and have them do it. You can NEVER go wrong with a professional doing it for you. They are trained and can do makeup in their sleep.

FINALLY!! A question that I have training in!! :] I'm a trained model, and I think that the smokey eyes would be fine. It just depends on the colors. :] Since you have a fair complexion, I would start out with a light gold. (Make sure it isn't dark- just enough so that it can be seen easily) Work your way from your eyelid to just under your eyebrows, and fade it on the sides. Use a silver next and, before you apply, open your eye(it rhymes, :]) and mark where your eyelid stops. Close the eye and, from the mark, work your way down. Be sure to blend the silver a little bit with the gold so it looks smoother. and last, for your eyelid, use black or grey, depending on your taste. I think that a clear or cherry lipgloss(Victoria's Secret, Beauty Rush... GREAT choice.) would do fine. If you feel up to it, stick on some fake lashes or coat your natural ones with mascara(if you're blonde[no offense], you'll want to use a brown mascara with that, if you're a brunette, then you might wanna either use black or brown.) Just for fun, I'm going to say to go buy some eye glitter and just dot a little at the outside corner of your eye(just a little). If that's too harsh, you can forget the whole thing. I hope I helped!! :]

Smokey eyes are really nice with a tint of gold and black eyeliner and mascara. PInk red blush, and clear gloss

If you're going out in the evening, I say go for the smokey eyes. They'll be a bit dramatic but I think the overall look will be great.

Smokey eyes will be great, but instead of the usual black eyeshadow, try in versions of green, or mauve+brown instead. I think it'll look hot.

Since you are fair,I think that dark and class eyeshadow works best with the dark coloured dress. You can try applying dark purple eyeshadow on the eyelid and apply light purple above the eyelid and blend well. You can also try dark blue eyeshadow on your eyelid without using light blue. However, try avoiding red as it does not really match well with the black and dark dress.
