I am a 60 yr old female who works unloading trucks and processing merchandise for a retailer. I "popped" something in my shoulder the other night, and probably have been favoring the right arm. I lifted a 40 lb. box today, and it felt like something tore in my bicep area--hurt a lot!!! Later on, it happened again, and I dropped everything I was holding. Now it aches, the muscle seems to be knotted up, and it has turned black and blue all over the whole muscle area. (Which is LARGE--I have fat, fat arms.) How is this bruising from the inside out? (I did not injure the arm from the outside) I've been icing it. What else can I do?

what you have probably done w/o looking at it and going off of just whatyou have described; I would have to say that you most likely have doen is some deep tissue strain and possibly either tore or strained some ligaments. which would possibly explain the pain you experienced when you attempted to lift the 40lb box. meaning that you already caused damage to some of the muscle groups in your shoulder and some of the tendons in the scapula area lead over and around the shoulder area. which could've weakened the muscle groups in your upper arm. My suggestion for follow- up care would be no lifting anything over 5lbs for at least a few more days. Ibuprofen or another over the counter anit- inflammitory drug, followed by using a heating pad on the affected area and if you have a deep enough bathtub to soak once a day in a hot tub using epsom salts. but I strongly suggest going to your normal physician and consulting them and getting a proper physical exam of the affected areas. I wish you the best of luck and a fast recovery.

it is completely possile for a muscle to tear, when working out mucles start to produce minor tears, the swelling of these repairing themselves is the muscles you see when you look at a body builder, this is probobally a little more severe than those but i recomend not going to a doctor because i assure you that it will fix itself in the next 3 days with no help
