What do you think is an appropriate tip for various services? How do you decide what to give?

i think no matter how bad the service is you should always tip at least 10%, if the service is good then you could always tip more than 10%. but always take into account when having a large party.

Criminy, I've just read some answers and I'm a little sad about how little most folks know about the entire service industry. 10%?? As a food server, I have to pay, at the end of my shift, the bar, the bussers, the runners, the kitchen, and what I have left is what I pay the rent with. There is a token check for me every two weeks. $30-$60. This is because we, as servers are taxed on our tips. So if we don't make at least 10-15%, we have just paid out of our own pockets, the bar, the bussers, the runners, etc. I am a good server, in a good restaurant, and my co-workers kick *** every night. And I try to tip 20% because I know how hard the job is. If I take a cab, a few dollars more than the meter, because those cab drivers, more often than not, have to pay out sometimes $200 a DAY, whether they get fare or not. The service industry is hard, but can be rewarding in more ways than 1. I hoped this helped :-)

I actually have waitressed for 26 years. There are those customers that do not tip properly, yet then you actually have some that tip wayyyy previous what's common so the day is in no way a loss. I used to tip a standard 15-20%, but recently have adopted a tip-for-service system, as I have received some pretty poor service over the years. Now, I tip 15% for standard service and up it for great service. Nada for bad service.

It is usually 10% of the total bill. But if u tend to go to a place quite often, you should be generous while tipping. Beecuase if u tip too low, the waiters do remember this and can put some disgusting things in ur food next time, even spit on it or etcc etc, i have seen some videos on this, it was on a tv show, dont remember the name though.

I have left as little as a dollar when the service was poor and told the person and the manager why. I usually leave 15%. I have left more for great service when I had extra money.

Tipping depends on where you are (country wise). For sure american way of tipping is overdone in most countries.
In Netherlands if it is good say 5%.
In Italy just change only, people not used to tipping. Americans spoil Italy and that's a shame.

I generallly give 15% unless the service was poor. More if the service was exceptional or on a holiday.

15% for average service at a restaurant, adjust up or down for service, not the food. A buck or two here and there for valets, porters, taxi drivers, and about $5 for the person who does my hair.

It all varies.
