You should check out freecycle yahoo groups and find ways to get free stuff and give stuff of your own that you consider junk that might be another person's treasure!

Any other ideas on forums/sites/groups like this?

Check out this site and just add the name of the place you live to the search to become involved if you want. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=freecycle

If you're in an apartment, leave them in the laundry room. Also, putting usable stuff in a bag on the ground next to the dumpster (instead of in the dumpster) is a good way to make sure it gets picked up.

Craigslist is another option, but honestly I'm a bit put off by craigslist.

No. Everything goes to Goodwill or the battered women's shelter.
The shelter always needs things.....from clothes to toiletries.

I have looked at freecycle, but I have reservations about it. I like the idea, but not the fact of having strangers coming to my house. I wish there was a place to exchange things that was not so personal. If someone could come up with a drop off/pick up site, I'd definitely do it.

One thing I always do is, when I'm traveling in a city that has a metro or subway or el train, if I get an unlimited day's ride pass, as I'm leaving the train for the last time that day I'll hand it to someone to use for the rest of their day. It's a little thing, but it feels good to do, especially if that person looks like they are having a tough day and needing a break.

I'm not capable of throwing anything halfway decent away. Once a year I have a one day yard sale. Halfway through the day everything goes to half price. Whatever is left at the end of the day goes to the gleaners and the mission.

check yahoo groups for freecycle.com in your area. It is a great organization with a win-win mission. Keeping things out of landfills, getting things to those who really need it and an outlet for people who have things to give. It is great!!!!!!

Yes, I distribute mine & other family members' old cloths & accesories to needy and it is in our Indian tradition to donate objects of no-use to others.

Sometimes it's more trouble that it's worth, but I can find freinds who can use it
