The question is not asked correctly. The Sioux indians defeated a unit of the US Army(7th Cavalry) at the Little Big Horn under Custer in 1876. However, the Army as a whole under General of the Army Sherman eventually defeated the Sioux and the death of Crazy Horse during 1876/77 to force the Sioux onto reservations.

G'day Teslyn c,

Thank you for your question.

George Custer is the man. His force was wiped out by the Sioux at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. Custer is generally believed to have attacked when his forces were outnumbered 3 to 1.

I have attached sources for your reference.
