I have a serious kidney infection. They said mass infection. He seemed pretty concerned. Gave me a shot of antibiotic that hurt like hell and I have to go back tomorrow for another appointment and possible Cat Scan and another shot! argh. How bad could this be and is it anything to worry about and what could I possibly expect?

A kidney infection - pylornephritis - can be dangerous. You need to continue with your antibiotic therapy. It might hurt but kidney shutdown and dialysis is not too pretty!!! I was in hospital for 10 days with mine a few years ago and on IV antibiotics 3x a day.

I've suffered from kidney infections off and on through my entire life. Yes, it can be serious, but they usually respond well to antibiotics. In my case, I actually have a kidney defect which makes me more susceptible to them and I have to be careful to drink a lot of fluid and be aware to catch the first sign of infection. It is more common for people to develop a bladder infection and then if it is not treated the kidney infection develops. Your doctor probably wants to be sure that you don't have a previously undetected defect, and that the kidney looks normal size. Even if they find something odd, as in my case, it's usually not something to panic about. I live a normal life, for the most part, and the changes I had to make to help avoid infections are not a big deal. I drink more water and cranberry juice than most folks, I use white toilet paper, and I'm careful to wear cotton undies. Not things that most people would take note of or need to know about.
Infections sometimes just happen, though, and that could be your case. The rest is just a precaution to avoid trouble in future. After the test, you doctor can give you the advice you need to make the decisions. More than likely you will just be told to drink more, go to the bathroom when you need to, and watch out in future.
Sorry to hear about the shot. I've always been somewhat grateful for being allergic to Penicillin, given that the shots are always the chioce first treatment. On the other hand, I get to choke down huge horse pills multiple times a day, on an empty stomach. In meantime, just relax and see your doctor. I hope you get good news, and this is just one of those bad memories in life.

My kidney infection put me in the hospital for 3 days. If this is not taken care of properly your kidney can die leaving you with only one. It felt like all of Hell's Angles kicked me in the side for 2 days with steel toe boots. Morphine did not help. I am better now. I am more aware of how much water I drink. I drink at least 12 glasses a day. I would not wish a kidney infection on my worst enemy. Good luck.

A kidney infection is always dangerous. If your kidneys shut down you are looking at a lifetime on dialysis. As long as the Drs catch the infection early it can usually be cleared up....work with them and good luck to you..............

From the sound of it you should be in the hospital on iv antibiotics. IF your kidneys shut down you will have to be on dialysis and possibly a kidney transplant.

Let the doctors do their jobs and let them know how you're feeling along the way and don't miss your appointments or tell yourself you can cure it yourself without any painful shots. You're lucky to be getting help. It could become terrible if you don't get treatment, as it is, it's probably going to be fine if you take the treatments. After you're done, study nutrition and learn what to do to take good care of your body so it doesn't happen again.

See the link below for National Institutes of Health info and other links.

It is a serious condition, but it's not going to help you to panic. You need to ask your doctor any questions that you have and follow her/his orders.
