How many of you would accept the return of the type of slavery that took place in U.S., but with your group being the one doing the slaving?

That is to say, regardless of your skin color and cultural background, if your group were the masters, would you welcome having slaves in the same conditions as they were before?

I'm black and I say even if the tables were turned somehow, I just couldn't treat another human being in such a savage way (separating families like cattle, beating them, lynching them, raping them, forbidding education to them and then calling them stupid, etc.)

So It's open house, speak your piece, but keep it peaceful.

I stand by my decision to ask this question because many years after U.S. slavery was abolished, the Holocaust happened and the world just stood by.

The hate speech on the Internet makes me fear for my life. I'm not even sure if having a child is an option anymore. Why bring one up amongst so much hatred?

I wish I could give the guy that mentioned Greco-Roman slavery an extra ten points.

My husband is a psychologist and we have had many conversations about the very scary studies that show people can be convinced to to horrible things to other people under certain circumstances and given certain social pressures. I'm not sure that's been stamped out of us; I wish I could say for sure it had been. No, in my current state of mind (and hoping and praying I'll never be altered by social pressure the way millions of people have been throughout history) I could not dream of treating someone with such disrespect and/or brutality. Heck, I thank waitstaff up and down just for coming to refill my water, and it's their JOB.

I've read some (and continue to read more) literature for both my academic studies and personal interest about American slavery and Greco-Roman slavery. Philosophically it is beyond apalling, but the harsh physical realities of a slave's life are simply excruciating to read about (Toni Morrison's "Beloved", K.R. Bradley's "Slavery and Society at Rome", etc. etc. etc.).

Whoever already commented that we still have non-institutionalized slavery throughout the world is absolutely right. Kevin Bales' work "Disposable People" tells you all about this.

Glad we're still talking about it.

I like your question!
I am white my soon to be husband is black
I would be devastated if anything like that would happen we love each other regardless of our race, it's an embarrassment to me as a white person to think our race ever did such a thing. I would never accept it we would have to go live somewhere else because I would NEVER ACCEPT that EVER! even if i were with a white man i would feel the same way people are people, i've always felt that way. This is the first black man i've been with and him as a person is no different than a white man they are human just with a tan *smile*

I hope no one says that they would accept slavery! I'm white, as is my husband, but we are both descendants of Scottish Highlanders sold into slavery in America (before it was the U.S.) for rebelling against the the English. People of all races and origins have been subjected to this horrific practice, and many people around the world still are. I would be appalled if anyone could honestly say they don't know better by now.

I couldn't subject any human being to those types of crimes against humanity. I also hope that we as a country have moved past that and closer to wanting peace and acceptance for people of all backgrounds. I know that I would like it to be that way.

Sounds to me like you are trying to provoke anger or sympathy. And your question is stupid. No one would accept their group being enslaved. Except maybe yours, since a lot of Africans were sold into slavery by other Africans.
