He knows, but it's like he doesn't really listen. I have avoided having anything to do with him so much and we
have been married a long time. I'd like to know if anyone who has IC has ever had this problem and if there is anything I can do?

Check out ichelp.org on the net. I don't personnally have the problem, but I had an aunt who did suffer for many years. While I can tell you about the physical side of it, I'm afraid not suffering, I would not be a good one to offer you advice on how to cope with it. But I do know there are support groups and at that site there are links and info, plus pamphlets that might help you out.
The only advice I could offer you is to explore other avenues of intimacy. Since you have been married so long, you understand that intimacy can include things like cuddles and holding, as well as other types of physical contact which don't involve penetration. Forgive me if that sounds crude, I just don't know a better way to phrase it. You would probably benefit from the physical contact as much as he would, especially if you could find some way to take the tension out of the situation and knew it would not involve pain for you. I'm sure your husband doesn't want to hurt you, he may well just not know anything better to suggest either. Perhaps if the two of you had a frank discussion with your doctor, he would have a better appreciation and understanding of the problem, and the doctor might have some suggestions as well. You certainly aren't the first or only patient he's had with the problem, and would be a good person to discuss options with. I do know there are things that you can do to help alleviate the pain, unfortunately I can't remember what all they are. But I am sure the site I gave you will provide you with a lot of the information you are asking for and interested in. I hope you are able to find something that will help.
