hello, i have a strong base in science and mathematics, and i was considering pharmacy, until my friend told me that optometry is as rewarding as pharmacy, and it takes less time to complete the degree, is that true, what major do you think is should pick?

It is a professional course, so I would say that it is a good profession. The only thing is that it depends on who you are and what your personality is towards the course. Overall, it's a good job to have.

I can't speak to the time and hours it take for the degree, but optometry is definitely a growth industry. A lot of us have poor eyesight and there will be a need for eye care as much as any other kind of care.

Optometrists get paid pretty well and don't have the long hours physicians have.

I'd look into it.

They are both good professions. Here is my opinion.

PHARMACIST
time to complete 2-3 years undergrad + 4 years grad also may need another year of residency
pros
demand and jobs growing very fast, salaries increasing
cons
dealing with insurance is a hassle, stress

OPTOMETRIST
time to complete 2-3 years undergrad + 4 years grad also may need 1-2 years residency
pros
less liability compared to physicians, good hours
expanding into more areas
cons
optometrists losing money to discount outfits (1800 contacts, etc.)
profession growth slow and demand stagnant
