The nutrition specialist I see to keep my family eating the right things and so forth told me to start my 3 month old son on rice cereal from the spoon, since he seems hungry all the time. He can't get full off of just formula....does this sound normal? The doctor also said it was okay to give him cereal, but a lot of people say no. What do you think?

Mix His rice cereal with his formula and add 2 tea spoons of baby's banana food. YOu can also boil carrots, mix it with a little of sugar and mix it in the formula. He'll love it.

Current pediatric guidelines in the U.S. are to start baby on cereal at 6 months. Different generations and different cultures have different perception of what is right to feed infants. Do you know that there are people in this country feeding newborns a concoction of beef broth?!... Anyway. The nutritionist you consulted is correct about only feeding solids with a spoon and not mixing it in the baby’s bottle but three months is still young for it. If your son is gaining weight and he is generally healthy, he is getting enough nutrients, even thought he might “seem” hungry. It might be better to wait a couple of months for the cereal -- after all, he will have it all his life... Bottom line: consider all the well-meaning advice, but trust your instincts -- you know your child the best. The nutritionist, the doctor, or anyone on this forum could only provide an opinion -- you make the informed decision.

yes this is normal use the rice cereal advised i use farex on my 3 month old I'm in Australia i have also given her and my previous child Heinz baby food from 4 month old at the age of 3 months and my doctor said that this is fine in the end this is your baby and you have to listen to it crying in hunger when it is not full but is strongly advised that you do not over feed at this stage they should have a few spoonfuls mixed with breast/formula milk once a day if you do it at night like dinner time they may settle easier and sleep longer your baby will let you know if it does not want to eat yet but keep trying as they have to get used to the new flavours and textures have fun blend up potatoes and fresh veggies with there milk to in a few weeks after you have had him on the cereal for a little while..

I have read many questions on this site about the same thing. I think the responses are regional and depending on where you live there is a difference. I live in Indiana USA and the doctors here say it is ok to start at 4 months. I see that people from Canada say that you shouldn't do it under 6 months. Come to think of it maybe that's why we're one of the fatest states in the country. hmmm....

My 8 week old was hospitalized for RSV at 6 weeks and evidently RSV causes acid reflux, so they had me put rice cereal in the formula. I was told i can continue as long as it doesnt lead to bad constipation. So now i do it at night and it REALLY help her to sleep. i stopped during the day since shes nit a big eater and id like her to get as much formula in her system as possible. In a nutshell, if the doctor says it's fine, it probably is.

Wow, my children's pediatrician is adamant that no baby should receive even the most liquefied solid until 6 months old, keep in mind 1x per day 1st than 1x than 3x no more formula is primary source of nutrition until 1

If the Dr said okay then it's okay. I would start plain just mixing it with formula. Let his tummy get used to that and then you can add the extras. It is about time he starts cereal and you'll be surprised how much it satisfies him!

my dr said absolutely no cereal until 6mo. so that is what I did. But if your Dr. says it is ok then I would go with him. My grandma started all of her kids on cereal early and thought it was just horrible that I wasn't doing the same with my son. But if your Dr. said it is fine then go for it.

you and your doctor know what is best for your baby! in australia it is strongly recomended to wait until 6mths, but i started my 2 children at around 4mths - very small amounts. i was frowned upon by some people who were "by the books type people", but both my children were big babies at birth & were above average in growth so they needed to start a bit earlier as they were wanting to breastfeed 8-9 times in 24hrs after getting down to 6 feeds a day. 3mths is fairly young to start, but if dr has said ok for rice cerial - then go for it - but only rice cerial for now. it will most likely help him sleep longer at night if you give it after his night time bottle.
