He broke his hand falling off his bike, ( and his sister is not complaining of being hit by him ) I took him to the local hostipal as his hand very quickly swelled, although it has not bruised. I was not able to keep the xrays, my main concern is that only being padded and bandaged it still gets knocked ( he is a 11 year old boy ) and that he is in pain that a cast could help protect against.

Was he treated in the E.R.? Or at the orthopedist's office? Treatment depends on the exact location of the metacarpal fracture...varies greatly depending on location. If he was treated in the E.R. or by an orthopedic doctor...TRUST THE DOCTOR. There are many types of fractures that are not treated with casts. The proper treatment for this particular fracture cannot be determned on line by someone who has not seen it. If you have concerns, follow-up with the doc to get a clear understanding of his plan of treatment.

Thing to consider is how the fracture looked like on Xrays-this fracture(4th or 5th metacarpal) is usually called "boxer's fracture", a common injury in professional boxers, hence the term. A layman can get this by punching a wall or any hard object for that matter with the 4th or 5th knuckles absorbing the impact. Sure your son didn't get into a fight? Anyway, if the fracture is displaced orthopedists sometimes insert a wire into the shaft of the metacarpal to align the fragments. If not displaced, a gutter splint would probably suffice. Wish you could give more details as to how the fracture looked like.
