I think you should get a leopard gecko. I have kept and bred both, leopards are by far easier and more visible.
Cresties tend to spend most of the sleeping under a leaf, whereas leopard geckos come out and climb on stuff and look around and eat. They come out at night, too, of course, but you will actually see them during the day.
Also, they're easier to house. Due to their high humidity requirements, crested geckos should be kept in front-opening glass enclosures - not glass tanks with mesh lids. A leo, however, can be kept in a glass tank that doesn't even need a lid if it's high enough and if you don't have cats (but, please, get a lid anyway :)) Cresties also need lots of plants, and high humidity (so daily spraying/misting.)
Leos are easier to feed, you just dump some crickets in there, put some mealworms in a dish and you're set. Cresties need a mix of bugs and fruit (which requires mashing / blending fruit like banana and mango etc with baby food to make a liquidy mush that they lap up.)
Leos are also less expensive and easier to find (try to buy from a breeder - they will be nicer, healthier and way less expensive.)
Crested geckos aren't particularly hard to care for, though, and if you really like crested geckos there is no reason you can't go for one, if you're prepared to put in some extra time every day to mist them, clean poop off the sides of the cage, feed them their varied diet, and of course, to spend a little money.

I don't have cresteds but, I have leos. They are SO fun and easy. I suggest a leopard gecko over a crested gecko.

Leopard Gecko, they're more interactive. I'm not saying that they know you and are interactive like a dog, but they let you hold them more readily. Also leopard geckos are easier to feed. Cresteds from what I understand, need special food on top of the crickets and meal worms.
either way make sure you gut load the crickets. That is that you feed them well for about 24 hours prior to feeding the gecko. they make actual cricket food for this too.

Both geckos make good single gecko pets. I tend to lean towards leopard geckos because I think they are just that much easier to take care of. They don't need mixed foods, they don't need an arboreal set up and they don't need misting every day. Leopard geckos can be kept in a much smaller enclosure and be perfectly happy.
good luck on your choice.
