The assasination of the Austrian prince would be great for an essay - but a very long one. The assasination was more of a trigger on a gun, rather than the bullet, gun powder, and gun itself (as well as who was pointing it at whom) since there were a large variety of factors already staged for the beginning of World War I when this happened. The more I read about it, the more I realize what an expert one needs to be to explain it!
Historical questions are always complex, so I would shoot for something that appears as simple as possible - since it won't turn out that way, anyway. One example might be how slavery in our country caused the civil rights movement of the 1960's. Because of the distance of time between the events, the cause and effects are actually more sweeping and therefore, easier to see.

Wars are kind of obvious topics. What about particular movements in history. Like what lead to the Equal Rights movement. Maybe Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat or Martin Luther King's speech. Or how about the way politics have changed since the invention of the television.

You could write on what caused the current crisis in Darfur.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfur_crisis
Or you could write about why the Panama Canal was built. (Cape Hope)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama_canal
Or you would write about why Franklin Roosevelt created social security and other New Deal reforms (the Great Depression)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_deal
Or you could write about why Louisiana is the only state in the US that uses the "civil law" methods of continental Europe instead of the "common law" of England (French origins)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_law
Or you could write about why the United Nations wrote the Kyoto Protocol. (Global warming) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_protocol
The effects of the U.S. bombs on Hiroshima http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki
It really depends on your time period and what you are interested in. There are an infinite number of possiblities. Good luck!

How about the assasination of franz ferdinand. It started world war one. Be sure to take into account the conditions present that would allow for one death to cause a world war.
