I don't think you'd be here if you didn't already like to read at least a little. You have to read questions and answers don't you?
I think some people never liked to read because it wasn't cool in school and they never learned what they could get out of it. Most of the books you had to read in school were boring, and that soured their taste for reading in general. I remembered being teased some for reading too much, but I didn't care.
I also think it could be because of class. I grew up dirt poor in an immigrant family. I wanted books all the time when I was young but couldn't afford it, and the city library seemed intimidating. At school we only went to the library once a week, but of course I'd finish my book that afternoon. So it would be understandable if the people in my area never learned to appreciate books. And with people like me, it came down to utilities...or books.
It also comes down to education. Most people around here don't read. If they do it's books about God or romance novels. I honestly think that if these people actually tried to read a book, they wouldn't understand it. They were poor in school or had poor teachers, and therefore have a limited vocabulary.
I try to break the cycle and give books as children's gifts. I wish someone had done that for me. That'd rock even now!

I have often wondered this myself. My husband & I both like to read & two of our three boys enjoy it also. The third is only 5, but he enjoys learning to read also.
Reading improves the vocabulary & it stimulates the imagination. It also helps to improve spelling skills. Something I have noticed would do MANY of the people on Yahoo Answers a world of good. It gives your brain something to chew on besides watching t.v. all day & pickling it or sitting in front of computer. T.V. does not stimulate the brain & keep it active. Neither does a computer or video games. Reading makes the brain HAVE to work...
That is most likely why there are so many people who do not read & it shows in the way they talk & the fact that they cannot carry on an intelligent conversation about anything but music & celebrities.....

because people like the guy that i am not dating just do not! they do not know what a good book is but rather all the curse words from South Park or will drool at pics of celebs like Jessica Alba and such!it is the way that they were brought up and today many people prefer to watch TV than pick up a good book and read it!in my family there was always reading either be it poems, literature or just fun reading! we- my sister, brother and myself are well educated and it all depends upon the surroundings in which you were brought up, how much time your parents spent with you reading to you and so forth!people who do not read are lazy or just are too stubborn or do to want to be more open minded! these people think that reading is for geeks and not for everyday knowledge, that books are a waste of time, space and money or that books will not teach you anything in the long run! they are so involved with the latest technology that reading is forgotten!people who do not read are in my opinion idiots or morons or have too much pride to admit when they are wrong and whne they are right!

I read a great deal and I think that Barnes and Noble and also Borders profits show that there are plenty of other people who read as well. Unfortunately there is also a great number of people who only watch tv as well...it's something I don't quite understand either but when it comes down to it.... to each his own.

I like to read, but I know many people who don't. I've noticed that they say they hate to read, but they will find certain books they just cannot put down. Maybe they don't like the first few books they read and so they just give up?

Ok, I totally agree w/you. I don't understand it either. Laziness maybe? The fact that maybe they hated a teacher and don't think they need to read once they're out of school?
For me, reading is a continuing joy. Have loved it all my life. Glad to see there are others out there who do, too.

Most people secretly hate change. They particularly hate changing their point of view. That is why there are great upheavals everytime someone suggests a big change in society/religion/science.
Literature makes you think. It's another thing people hate doing.
That's why they made the computers. One click and wiki!
Why use the brain?
