It's an addiction, just like smoking or drugs. People who are alcoholics have a disease. They cannot easily quit, and often don't see why they should. It can begin for any number of reasons: from just a lot of social drinking, from trying to "drown one's sorrows," etc.
They will not quit just because their family or friends want them to. They may have to "hit bottom" or suffer some serious legal or health consequences in order to "see the light."

I'm confused. Do you mean why do people drink at all if alcoholism can result? That doesn't make sense. But if you're asking why cannot alcoholics just stop? You need to study addiction, not alcoholism.

Usual it's an addiction like tobacco and it's hard to quite. Others consume different amounts and have different precautions. Also the taste is a big factor in elders and the new age it's all about getting drunk and taking that risk
