My tree got damaged in Hurricane Wilma, It broke alot of major branches. I need to trim it properly to salvage the rest. This tree has been in my yard for over 50 years. Sentimental value.

If professional tree care isn't possible, a home owner with limited power tools and necessary ladder and safety equipment can salvage a tree.
Cutting broken branches as close to the main trunk contour, try to avoid cutting the slimy part of the main trunk just under the bark. Leaving "nubs" is acceptable and less danger of the main trunk being injured, but will usually send up spindly offshoots.

My experience cutting too deep in the main trunk has been a ringed "scab" grows and allows water to collect providing mosquitoes a nesting area.

If the top is completely gone I'd go for the biggest up turned branch and trim everything there up leaving a Y. All cuts needs a sealer applied after all cutting is done. Lawn & garden centers & nurserys will be best to advise a good sealer and it's application. I have seen people use plain white paint as a sealer and had good sucess.
A good healthy dose of 8-8-8 fertilizer before hard freeze and a injured but healthy tree will recover.
