im interested in buying this car, its a 1995 chevy corsica, and it turns over but won't crank, they guy said its the starter, every starter i ever had to go out would make a sound but not even turn over, like a clicking or grinding sound. so can it be the starter with that happening, i have never heard this car started. is there a way to start it without the starter, just temporarily , so i can hear it run? or does it sound like it has other problems?

a bad starter will not turn the engine over, there is more wrong the car than he is telling you. i would not buy it unless he can make it start.

Turning over and cranking are kind of the same thing. One thing to kind of make sure it is the starter that has a problem is to climb under the car and hit the starter with a hammer while someone turns the key. Make sure you and your clothes are not near anything that spins. Like a fan. If it starts to turn when you are hitting it you either have a bad starter, bad solenoid or a faulty connection to the starter. A car that old will have some corroded wiring. That would help explain the lack of a click when you turn the key. If it isn't the starter it could be any number of things.

To clarify, "turns over" and "cranks" is the same thing. If the starter engages properly, but doesn't start, something else is the matter. The first place I would check is the coil, make sure it is putting out power to the alternator. If thats good, check the cap and rotor, and make sure the wire from the coil to the alternator is good. From there, if all is good, I would replace the fuel filter. If that still doesn't do it, check and make sure the fuel pump is building pressure. But heres the thing. Even if the fuel pump is turning on, it doesn't mean its building proper pressure. Some engines have a sensor that tells the computer if there is proper pressure to the fuel rail, and will not allow the vehicle to start if proper pressure isn't achieved.

There could also be a fuse or two out. Not only inside the vehicle, but there is a fuse block inside the engine compartment that contains larger block-style fuses. Check them as well.

Good luck!

Oh PS:
If the Corisca has the 3.1L V6, then good. Its a good engine. If it has the 2.8L v6, dont buy it. The 3.1 engine is the same as the 2.8, but with the crank journal corrected. The 2.8 crank journal was drilled off center and is notorious for sheering crank weights off the crank because of it.

If it has the 2.0 or 2.2, then go for it, although with the 4 cylinder engine, I believe it might be under powered for your tastes.

The starter is fine. For a car to start it needs to acheive combustion in the cylinders. Things necessary for combustion are air, fuel, and spark. One of these is missing. Too many possibilities to think of on a car that is not currently yours. Best bet, buy a car already running. Who knows what has been changed or worked on this car that could add to the problem.

No there is no way to start it without a starter, either the starter is shot ,or the ring gear is stripped (big bucks) The ring gear is the large gear that the little gear on the starter engages when you turn the key., and it turns the crankshaft.
I would advise you to look for another vehicle, this one sounds like it already has a mess of problems. Good Luck

i own a repair shop ,and this sounds like one you need to stay away from,if it was a good car it would start,,never buy anything that you cant hear run,and there is no other way of starting this car either ,it either starts or it doesn't,and right now id say run ,because you never know what might really be wrong with it,,you know if it was just starter he would fix it,because he knows he could sell it for more money,so id pass on this deal,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.

he is lying to you, if the car is turning over wen you turn the key, then the starter is working properly cuz thats its only job to turn the engine over, so obviously its not the starter, its either spark or fuel problems, which usually arent as expensive to fix as replacing a starter but to figure out wat exactly is the problem can be a long process. so personally i wouldnt buy the car even if you do find out wats wrong cuz the guy already lied to you once so there is no tellin wat else he is lying about.

you refrain from buying this car, it's giving you a problem... and if you are really interested to own this corsica, tell the owner to make it roadworthy first before purchasing it...

You never buy a car if it won't start.
