Don't do it - you'll not only possibly introduce all sorts of nasties (bacteria, soap residue, etc) into the water, but you'll ruin their slime coating. This coating is on the fish sorta as a second layer of skin - it protects them from injury and sickness.

It does seem strange to pet one!! But my Oscars will eat out of my hand. I can feel their mouth when they do but i don't think they would like to be petted. Fish bodies have a "slime coating on their bodies". If the slime gets rubbed off it can Kill the fish!!

haha I just think they've learned who you are, and that you feed them. I hate cats, but my cat instantaneously becomes my best friend when it's feeding time.
Funny how that happend, isn't it?

it's a pavlovian response... i knew food was involved.
they associate you petting them with food...
it's ok to pet them.. just don't use your nails.
or if you don't pet them for a month, they'll forget about it.
