While they can be, the cheaper and easier way is to clean it in the shower with baby shampoo and a medium bristle brush. You'll see the grunge run off. Done too often or with too much vigor though will severely shorten the life of your cap.

The Dishwasher - however, make sure that you run an empty load to rid it of any and all residue.
Just place the caps on the upper rack. When you take them out, make sure you stuff the caps with wadded up paper while they dry to maintain their shapes.
White tissue paper would work best for white caps.

There should be a label inside to let you know how is clean it. I have hand washed my husbands cap.and then taken my grandsons bouncing balls and selected one that the cap fits on to dry, (clean the ball also) and had success with it.
