They may be able to tell at your first ultrasound, but possibly not if the embryos are lined up. More likely you will find out at your 20 week ultrasound (or sooner if your doc calls for an earlier one). I'm surprised you're having one so soon - my first ultrasound wasn't until week 12. Even then it just pretty much looked like a blob at that point.

Ultrasound is the best way to determine how many babies you are carrying. However, in the first trimester it can be difficult because there are women out there who have ultrasound pictures from as late as eight or ten weeks showing only one baby and find out weeks later they are expecting twins. One theory is that one baby can hide behind the other.
Twins can also be suspected if the uterus is larger than expected, especially if this is your first pregnancy, or if your symtoms are more exaggerated than in a normal pregnancy--ie morning sickness is more intense...but some women who have had twins did not experience exaggerated symptoms.
The only way to know for sure is an ultrasound.
There are a few factors that increase your chances of multiples such as IVF, your age, and a genetic history.
Good luck!

You should find out at either the heartbeat or ultrasound, whichever you Dr.decides to do first.
I can't ever hear a heartbeat until close to 14 weeks which is late...and I have an ultrasound at 16. But to detect twins you could find out much earlier.

The only way to know how many you're having is with an ultrasound (it's too early to hear the heartbeat with a dopler right now). As soon as you get your first ultrasound you'll know for sure.
Congratulations!

Yes, you'll find out during your next visit. Through the ultrasound, you'll be able to see the baby in the uterus and hear the heart beat. You'll also be able to find out if you have multiples. I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks and saw that there was only one heart beat, so you'll know if you have more than one baby in there. Good luck!

Yes, it matters. IVF has a much greater chance of producing multipuls (but only if they implanted more than one embryo). Either way, you won't know until you have an ultrasound.
Many congratulations.

You will be able to find out how many you are carrying at your second visit or about 6-8 weeks pregnant. You'll see the baby(S) heartbeat.

It depends sometimes it's very easy to tell if you are having multiples but if 1 baby hides in back of the other (it happens) then sometimes you won't know until you give birth.
