You should have him play a team sport and save him from the ridicule of his peers. Seriously, it will not be good for his self-esteem when he gets picked on every day at school.
However this is what my girlfriend says:

Abiding by the cliche answer for dancers, no, it is never too late to enroll in dance classes. However - the age of 10 is an especially good time to encourage your son in dance because he's young enough to avoid stereotypes, and old enough to focus. His gender will also aid him in the dance world - there are, ofcourse, an abundance of female dancers and few good males. Training in ballet could set him up not only as a succesfull ballet dancer, but also an excellent modern dancer if he opts for a different form of the art. Speaking of modern dancers: The infamous Martha Graham didn't begin dancing until her 20's (when most dancers are already professional, or reaching the end of their career) and became a renowned dancer, choreographer, and studio owner. A studio with a company that still thrives to this day.
Also - if your son is involved in other sports, ballet has proven to be beneficial to athletes. Professional football players have been known to attend ballet classes to keep themselves "light on their feet."
Best of luck to you and your son.

Not at all. It's a good age. The very youngest that a child should be to start formal ballet class is 7. Ten is young enough to have plenty of time to learn and old enough to have an attention span and some muscular strength.

No, my son started when he was 16 and would probably have made to the pros if he hadn't injured himself during 2 consecutive audition seasons. Age 10 is an ideal time for a boy to start. Male dancers are always in short supply and are treated with kid gloves and extra attention in every ballet school. Scholarships are always available for male dancers just about everywhere. Good Luck to him...

No, it's not too late to start learning ballet at 10. Have you ever watched the movie "Billy Elliot"? I think he started ballet at the age of 10. And a lot of children start gymnastics training around this age and gymnastics requires ballet training too, especially the girls who learn the sport of rhythmic gymnastics.

Well, it might be too late if he wants to make a career out dancing, but not to have fun and learn to do something beautiful, yet complicated and athletic.
The reason I said it might be too late to be professional is because I remeber my dance teacher saying something about boy's hip rotaters are different than girls, and it makes it difficult for boys to do certain things unless they are trained from a young age. Then again, I'm not sure, he could possibly still be young enough for a career in dancing, if that's what he wanted.

It's never too late! If you want him to learn quicker, maybe you should register him for lessons 2 times a week. And there is always Dance Camp in the summer!

Too late for what? To become professional? Maybe. To enjoy it and develop talent? Never. It's a wonderful idea to embrace his new passion and encourage him to take classes.
